Happy Last Week of School in 2011!
I'm looking forward to the many fun learning opportunities we have this week. Please feel free to stop by the room anytime!
Homework:
- This week's homework is in packet format. It contains holiday spelling activities as well as math problems involving units of measure. Please turn in the homework packet on Friday morning.
Buddies:
We will be making gingerbread houses with our buddies this Wednesday from 9-10am. We are in charge of bringing graham crackers and frosting. Please send these items in on Wednesday.
Bloom's Ball Project:
The students will be working on their family culture project in class this week to transform it into a 3d bloom's ball. Students were to complete the graphic organizer as homework last week. Please send it to school completed this week. On Friday, students will share their Bloom's Balls as well as a treat from their tradition ( a food, a game, a craft, etc...). If you are sending in a treat, make sure there is enough for 30 students and please alert me if your treat involves nuts as we have allergies to many kinds.
Report Cards:
Report cards will go home on Friday.
Have a safe, wonderful and Merry Christmas! I look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Hip Hip Hooray for a Happy First Day!
We had an amazing first day in 5th grade today. We went to an assembly for school rules and procedures. We learned the interests of our classmates by thinking of things we like that start with the same letter as our first name. Mrs. DeBono likes dodgeball, Quinten likes to quietly read, and Megan likes monkeys! We got to meet our new P.E. teacher, Mrs. Chesebrough and had our first cafeteria lunch of the year. We worked in teams to complete tasks and discussed our thoughts and feelings on 5th grade.
I'm so excited to get this year rockin! Students, you made my day today. I'm looking forward to another great day tomorrow. Enjoy your no homework night!
Love,
Mrs. DeBono

Happy New Year 2011
Welcome back students! Let's start 2011 off on the right foot. Make sure to read the blog weekly for homework, spelling and all other information. I look forward to seeing you in class tomorrow morning.
Homework for this week:
Monday- Spelling 3x each, Math worksheet (review of decimals, fractions, and percents)
Tuesday- Spelling Menu (will be chosen by the Student of the Week), Math worksheet
Wednesday- Creative writing assignment (handed out in class), Math worksheet
Thursday- Study spelling words, Math worksheet, Science reading comprehension
Friday- Reading over the weekend towards AR
*** A P.O.W. and a Current Event are due this Friday ***
*** Daily reading towards AR is required as well ***
Spelling Words:
(Will be posted Monday afternoon...the book was left at school, sorry!)
Problem of the Week:
Each year the national weather service monitors rainfall around the United States. Here is rainfall measured in Tucson over one week: Monday .36 inches, Tuesday .89 inches, Wednesday .93 inches, Thursday 1.21 inches, and Friday .76 inches. Write the inches of rainfall during the week in a numerical sequence. Analyze the change in rainfall from day to day and describe the changes using words like increasing, decreasing, and all together.
Current Event Tips:
** Your current event needs two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, tell me the 5Ws and H of your article (who, what, where, when, why, how). In the second paragraph, tell me your opinions and justifications for choosing the article. You may type or write your current event. You may click on Comet's Kids for Social Studies and Current Event websites to help locate an article online. You may use newspaper and magazine articles as well. Don't forget to attach your article to your current event. Plagiarizing is unacceptable and against school policy. Make sure your article is written in your own words and that citation is given.
